Why Origin by Ava DuVernay is a Must-See Film

Hey #PolishedPeople, It's your girl ThePolishedLady and today I wanted to share I was able to see the film "Origin by Ava DuVernay" thanks to the Herbert Simon Family Foundation providing free tickets to see the film.

I had no idea what I was going to see honestly and I am going to go ahead and put my disclaimer out here. I highly believe you should go watch the film. In fact here are some screening times to go see to for free here.

Herbert Simon Family Foundation has underwritten 10 screenings of ORIGIN across three days at Landmark Art Cinema Keystone and AMC Castleton in Indianapolis.

At the conclusion of each free screening, Soul Focused Group will facilitate a post-show discussion for the audience.

The film's run time is 2 hours and 10 minutes, with 30 minutes of post-show discussion.

We welcome student groups, particularly in the day-time matinee screenings. However, we do recommend that student attendees be 16 or older.

Screening Times:

  • Tuesday, 1/30 - 6:00pm (AMC Castleton) - LOW TICKET WARNING

  • Tuesday, 1/30 - 7:15pm (Landmark Art Cinema Keystone) - LOW TICKET WARNING

My opinion:

I had no idea what the word Caste was or what it meant. So I googled it, Caste means according to Merriam Webster Dictionary "any class or group of people who inherit exclusive privileges or are perceived as socially distinct." In the film, Isabel Wilkerson played by actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays an author who is trying to write a book about the Interconnectedness of the Nazi Germany, an India community called Dults known as the untouchables and the United States slavery of African American people.

It was interesting to see how history has a pattern of repeating itself and leaving us all connected with a trauma bond. There were little details that truly hit home like the Nazis studying the United States slavery to implement it in their systems to create what we know as "The Holocaust". In the movie Wilkerson states " Caste is not simply hatred , it’s the slow grooves of patterns that have been in use through systems that seem invisible."

I urge you to go see the film yourself and share your thoughts on what you believe about the interconnectedness of us all. The last thing I will leave you with is a quote in the movie "What is my life even worth if I am alive?".
