Recently, I took a trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to attend a diversity series class on how to Build a brand to last. I haven't been to the IMS since my fifth grade field trip and it's safe to say that things have changed at the brickyard.
We started our morning with a networking session in the Bobby Unser suite in Legends Row. Jimmie Mcmillian, the Chief Diversity Officer talked to us about the changes Indianapolis Motor Speedway is making to diversify the track. A takeaway from the conversation is when you get in positions of power do your part to lift the next well-deserved person up.
I did a couple interviews around the track and then I went to Turn Two. I spoke with Bri of "Wings and Wheels Foundation LLC" about the work they are doing to help those get into motorsports how don't have the means. Met some new friends and returned to the track to visit the Pit. Those badges cost $500 to experience the pit stop where they repair and get the race cars ready to race. I had a lot of fun. At first, I was curious if I will I be welcome in this space or how uncomfortable I would be in a space where I knew nothing about the industry. It's safe to say the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an open space for all. Everyone was so open to teach you about the teams, the different careers and motorsport industry. I talked with a guy who had been working for IMS for over 2o years and he said the best feeling you never get over is the sounds of track and race car.
